How to Care for Your Fresh-Cut Flowers Like a Florist
There is no better way to elevate a space than with fresh flowers, especially when they are thoughtfully arranged with care. Here at Trellis florals we offer bespoke florals for any occasion. We want your arrangements to last as long as possible, so here are some tips and tricks from the team that can help extend the life of your bouquet.

1. Start with a Clean Vase
First, your flowers need a clean vase. Before arranging your bouquet in your vase, be sure to give it a good wash with warm, soapy water. Afterwards make sure you wash it thoroughly to get rid of any soap residue that could be harmful to your flowers. Washing your vase helps prevent any bacteria from building up, which is one of the biggest culprits behind wilting flowers. You can also avoid this step altogether if you choose to get an arrangement from us that is already in a vase!
2. Trim the Stems, And Not Just Once
Trimming the stems of each flower at a 45° angle helps them get water more efficiently by increasing the overall surface area of the stem and by preventing blockage in the bottom of the vase. Simply use sharp, clean shears to trim them about ½ inch from the bottom of the stem before placing them in your clean vase. You can re-trim them every few days to help keep their hydration at the best. We usually re-trim our flower stems as soon as they arrive at the shop!
3. Give Them Fresh, Cool Water
Replace the water in your vase every 1-2 days. Flowers thrive in fresh, clean water and when left untouched for a few days can start to grow harmful bacteria. Clean, cool water helps keep their stems clear and healthy. If you notice the water getting cloudy, change it right away!
4. Remove Any Submerged Leaves
Leaves sitting below the water line will break down quickly and introduce bacteria. So, be sure to strip off any leaves that you think may be submerged in water before they get soggy!
5. Keep Them Out of the Heat
Flowers are happiest in cool environments, which is why we keep all our flowers cool in our flower fridge. Since you don’t have a flower fridge and want to display them in your home, simply avoid placing your arrangement near heating vents, sunny windows, or the kitchen stove. Even a few hours of direct heat can shorten their lifespan. By keeping them cool you can help prolong their beautiful life!

We hope these tips are helpful when you receive an arrangement from us. We want you to receive the maximum amount of enjoyment out of each and every carefully curated bloom! Order your next arrangement HERE!
